The Dark Ages
The definition of a dark age is, "an era of ignorance, superstition, or social chaos, or repression,(FreeDictionary.com)." All of these definitions apply to the Middle Ages. During this time their was great slaughters, burning of towns, and no official government making it, most definitely, a dark age. Historian Frantz Funck-Brentano states, "The Hungarians swarm over the Eastern provinces... they sacked town and village, and laid waste the fields. They burned down the churches and then departed with a crowd of captives.(Doc 1)." This quote shows the social chaos of the Middle Ages. Their was also a total lack of order in Europe during the Middle Ages and many events to prove it. One was in the year 842, when their was great slaughter in London, Quentavic, and Rochester. Later, in 846 Northmen burned the town of Dordrecht, they filled their boats with immense treasure, containing goods as well as men, and returned home(Doc 3). Their was also much ignorance in the Middle ages. This was shown in Funck-Brentano's article where he says, " There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror... Society has no longer any government.(Doc 1) This shows the ignorance of the Middle Ages, because both trade and government are the main structures of a country, and without what is there?
